The PhDiaries

In summer 2017 I began The PhDiaries, a YouTube channel that documents life as a PhD student and addresses common problems faced by early career researchers.

My videos aim to be succinct, at under five minutes, and have been endorsed and disseminated by the Royal Society of Chemistry, the European Association of Geochemistry, the European Space Agency, and the University of Oxford.

My PhD journey from start to finish is recorded above in one 12-minute video summarising the whole channel.

What do I vlog about?

PhD Matters

Is it normal to work at the weekend? How can I prepare for a conference? Common PhD student questions.

PLANETARY SCIENCE

Mars, Pluto, geochemistry, lab work; step-by-step guides to methods; insights into Earth Sciences research.

AcademiC Matters

How do you write an academic CV? What's it like publishing a paper? Common questions in general academia.

Mental Health

Separating PhD and regular life; working past setbacks; talking about the problems you wish someone had told you about.

CREATIVE WRITING

Where does the idea for a novel come from? What is Plutoshine about? Not-so-common writing questions.

PRODUCTIVITY

How can I maintain concentration in a world of distractions? When am I at my most productive? Intriguing habits to try.
